Creating a New Route

There are several ways to create a route.  The first is to individually add stops and students.

Video on manually creating a route

To manually create a new route, click on the Routes tab.

Click on the + icon to the right.

Then select the vehicle that this route is for.  Note – if there is already a route for this vehicle, you will want to create a new TRIP within the route rather than a new route.

You can normally take the defaults on this screen.  It will assume a M-F route and the date range will automatically include the dates for the current year/session that you are working.  You can also adjust these later if needed.  Click on the Create button.

You will now see the route listed.     To change the name of the route, simply click on the name and it will become editable.

After editing the route name, click on the save icon to the right.

Now that the route has been created, you will click on the + to create a new trip (i.e. AM trip or PM trip etc).

Typically  the trips are named the same as the route but with AM or PM at the end.  You can add a Bus Aide or you can wait and add later if needed.

Selecting schools and/or grades is optional, but if you select the schools and grades that apply to this route, it will help you narrow down the student information to select from as you assign students to the route.  In this example, this bus goes to Lincoln Middle school and has 7th, 8th and 9th graders that ride this bus.

Note – you can also assign a custom filter if you have defined one.  For example, if you are routing only SPED students, you could create a custom filter containing the students you want to work with and then assign that custom filter to this trip.

Click the Create button.

Now that the AM trip has been created, we are ready to add stops.  Note, to edit any of the settings (such as the school and grades for this trip), click on the 3 dots to the right.

To create stops on the route, we will use the + located at the trip level (not the top + on the route).

Click on the + in the trip section.

A panel will open on the bottom left of the screen that will allow you to begin adding stops.  If you have already entered your stops or imported them, you can simply select the stops from the drop down in the order that they occur on the route.  For example, let’s assume this route goes from the Transportation Depot first and then to 235 Circle Avenue and then 229 E Chestnut.

You simply select the stops from the list in the order that they occur.  First we will select the Transportation Depot.

The stop will be listed in the list at the bottom.  You can always adjust the stop times later, so you normally don’t worry about those at this point.

As you continue to select the stops, the system will add them to the list at the bottom and automatically enter the stop time.

Note that the route also shows on the map as you add the stops.  Remember, any of this can be adjusted later.

You will also want to make sure that you select the School as one of the stops, typically the last stop.     This will also help determine the students that can be assigned.

Once the stops have been added click on the green Save icon to save.

Once the stops have been created on the route, you can possibly auto assign the students.  This assumes that you have your students indicated as Riders if they ride the bus.  Only riders will be listed or auto assigned.

Click the + sign again (this will allow us to add stop as well as assign students).

The icon shown here will auto assign students.  The students it will auto assign are the ones you indicated when you created the trip (in this case Lincoln MS students in grades 7, 8 and 9 that are listed as Riders).  It will only auto assign students that are within the distance settings for the maximum distance from the home to stop (under settings).

The system will show the number of students and will provide a visual for how they were assigned.

In this case, 23 students were assigned.  If you click on the number 23 in this case, it will list out the assignments

Note that you can make adjustments by clicking on any of the dots to either remove the student or click on a dot that was not auto assigned to add a stop at that location.

Click on a dot that was auto-assigned and click the X in the upper right to remove that assignment.

Click on a dot for a student that was not auto assigned and you can click on Add Stop Here.

After making any adjustments, click on the green Save icon.

You can also add a stop by clicking the location on the map.  This is especially helpful for rural areas.  We would recommend that you first look at the “Select a Stop” list to see if the address is already a stop before adding a new address.   To add a stop by clicking on the map, click on the “Create new stop on map” check box.

Zoom in to the location on the map and then click where you want the stop located.  The system will create the stop and automatically add it into the route.  Note – you can reorder the stops later.

Click on the green save icon.

You can also search an address and add a stop at that address.  Again, it is suggested that you look at the “Select a stop” drop down first to see if a stop already exists for that address.

You can simply start typing an address and the autofill will provide suggestions as you type.  Select from the drop down.  Once you select a stop, it will be added as a stop on the route.     Note – you can reorder the stops later if needed.

Click Save to save the new stop.

See the section below on reordering stops or the section on using the route optimization feature to optimize and reorder the stops.
