Using Conditional formatting to highlight Pay Group differences in the Payroll Deductions sheet for ISIS

Highlight the data in the column that you want to compare. Hint – place you cursor on the bottom border of the cell and hold the shift key and double click)

From the Home tab, select Conditional Formatting, Highlight Cell Rules and then More Rules…


Select “Use a formula to determine which cells to format”

Enter the formula as shown. 

=AB4<> OFFSET(AB4,0,-1)





In this case cell AB4 is the top cell for the column that we want to compare with.  This formula tells excel to compare AB4 with the cell to it’s left (offset(AB4,0,-1) where the -1 is the column offset.  The formula will adjust for all rows.

Click on the Format button.






Select a color such as red.

Click on OK twice.



Entries that are different will now be highlighted
