Using Navigator to bring a spool file down to an excel spreadsheet

Open up iSeries navigator: (start, programs, iSeries, iSeries navigator)

Double click on Printer Output.

Be sure you can see your desktop behind the Navigator window, as shown below:

Click on the file you want to bring down and drag it to the desktop.

If it does not drag to your desktop you have a service pack issue, contact the supportdesk.

The above screen will appear as the file is being copied to your PC on the desktop.

The file will look like this on the desktop:

Open up excel, and choose file, open.  The following will appear:

Be sure to change the “files of type” at the bottom to All files and the “Look in” to the desktop – as this is where the spooled file from the AS400 is.

Because the spooled file is straight “text”, Excel wants the file to be “divided”.

Click Next.

Click on the Arrows between the colums (double click to delete, just read the screen).  Move the arrow to line up the at the beginning of each column.

You will need to scroll to the left and right and up and down to get below the report headings to see the columns of data.

Click next and then finish.

The data is now in excel.

Delete the first few lines and the last “end of report” line – resize the columns, do whatever you want.

Here the customer number has a thousands separator – format the column and change the decimal place to 0.
